David M. Smith, DDS, MD
Dr. Smith grew up in in southeast Kansas, graduating from Fredonia High School. He completed his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University and received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry.
Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Smith was commissioned in the United States Air Force. After four years of practice as a general dental officer, he was selected for specialty training and entered the residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He completed his training in 1999, having earned his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio.
During his Air Force career, Dr. Smith served as the program director for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at David Grant Medical Center on Travis Air Force Base, California. He subsequently served as Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Commander of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Flight, and Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas.
Military decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. Dr. Smith served for twenty-one years prior to his retirement with the rank of Colonel.
Dr. Smith is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He maintains memberships in the American Dental Association, the Missouri Dental Association, the Missouri State Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Greater Kansas City Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Smith’s practice encompasses all areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery including dental implant placement, dentoalveolar surgery and extractions, oral pathology, facial trauma, as well as bone grafting and maxillofacial soft and hard tissue reconstruction. When not working in his practice, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his wife, Melissa, and their three children.
